"This officer has conducted many convoy patrols under very adverse weather conditions.
Many times when the weather has been unfit for a section he has flown alone in an effort to engage the enemy. On one occasion he shot down a Junkers 88 a hundred miles out to sea. Over Dunkirk he destroyed a Messerschmitt 109 and in September, 1940, he shot down two Dornier 215's. Flight Lieutenant Leather has led his flight, and frequently his squadron, with skill and courage."
