For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with a Marine battalion at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 19 February 1945. Sergeant Bartkiewics, voluntarily and without orders, repeatedly loaded and drove a cargo carrier through heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire in order to supply his battalion. During the critical period on this date, he was the only supply vehicle to cross the island. His great courage and splendid initiative contributed materially to the success of his battalion. His valiant devotion to duty and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
