Company K, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division "Fighting Fourth", U.S. Marine Corps
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Machine-Gun Squad while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Tinian in the Marianas, on 25 July 1944. Braving a terrific concentration of machine-gun and sniper fire when the entire crew of one machine gun became casualties, Private First Class Showers fearlessly left his protected position and, put it in operation and maintained a steady stream of fire in a valiant effort to clean out a force of Japanese troops who had infiltrated our lines. Although seriously wounded during the furious action, he continued to pour his devastating barrages on the enemy and succeeded in inflicting heavy casualties before he himself was fatally struck down by a burst from a Japanese weapon. By his bold initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and resolute fortitude in the face of savage opposition, Private First Class Showers contributed materially to the success of our operations against this vital enemy stronghold, and his undaunted courage and decisive conduct throughout a period of fierce hostilities upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."
