1 November 1944 - January 1945.
For outstanding service and devotion to duty.
Lt.Col. Nicklin was one of the original members of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. On taking over command of the Battalion just prior to 1st November 1944 he was ordered to take strong action to rectify certain aspects of the Battalion's life which were not satisfactory. In spite of considerable difficulties, by sheer determination, enthusiasm and great devotion to duty he has raised the efficiency of the Battalion as a fighting unit to a very high lever during the period November 1944 to January 1945.
His great achievement in this connection during this short period has been remarkable.
His example and tact has further largely contributed to the smooth working and unparalleled success which has met the inclusion of a Canadian Battalion in a British Brigade.
Throughout the present campaign his example of courageous leadership has been an inspiration to all who have come in contact with him.
Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
