Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Warrent Officer 2nd Class
Unit:
"D" Company, Green Howards Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment, Home Forces, British Army
Awarded on:
January 7th, 1941
Recommendation:
"This Warrant Officer joined the Battalion from the (Irish)King's Liverpool Regiment on 23rd April 1940, with an excellent recommendation, which subsequent events have served to emphasise.
On 29th July,1940,enemy dive bombers attacked the Eastern Arm of Dover Harbour, dropping about 120 high explosive and incendiary devices. A sandbag emplacement occupied by men of "D" Company received a direct hit, two of them being buried. Not withstanding the the blinding and acid fumes, and the fact that bombs were still falling, C.S.M. J.McDonald led a rescue party, and was himself instrumental in digging out the two men, one of whom was already dead.
On the 27th September,1940, while the harbour was being heavily shelled by long range guns of heavy calibre, one shell burst a few yards from C.S.M J. McDonald and his Company Commander Captain F.Dawson, D.S.O, M.C., who was fatally wounded, and with complete disregard for his own safety, C.S.M. McDonald assisted to place him on a stretcher and superintended his removal.
On other occasions during periods of bombing and shelling, this Warrant Officer has shown a cheerful disregard of danger, and his steadiness under fire has been an inspiration to the whole Battalion."

Presented at Buckingham Palace on March 25th, 1941.
Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM)
