Schellong’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“On the 29.02.1944 the SS-Freiw. Sturm-Brigade ‘Langemarck’, under the command of SS-Sturmbannführer Schellong, received the order to occupy the village of Jampol (located on the left boundary of the SS-Panzer-Kampfgruppe ‘Das Reich’). From here they were to defend against any enemy attempts to launch a flanking attack around the left wing of the Kampfgruppe.

The Brigade, without any contact with friendly units to the left or right, fought against a much superior foe from the beginning. Positioned all on its own, the Brigade defended against the enemy attempts to capture Jampol. SS-Sturmbannführer Schellong, commanding the merged elements of the Brigade and Feld-Ersatz-Bataillon 196, was able to produce repeated success whilst fighting at the head of his men. He and his troops were able to eject the enemy forces that had penetrated into the city multiple times in close combat and push them back to their jump-off positions.

Although Jampol was to be evacuated by order of the Korps, SS-Sturmbannführer Schellong made the independent decision to remain in the village for another 24 hours. In doing so he created very favourable conditions for the continued German defense in the area.

Only after Jampol had been encircled did SS-Sturmbannführer Schellong break the enemy ring on the afternoon of the 02.03.1944. Withstanding continual enemy flank attacks, he led his Brigade and the remnants of Feld-Ersatz-Bataillon 196 to the ordered fallback positions.

As a result of SS-Sturmbannführer Schellong’s successful defense of Jampol, the enemy thrust towards Tarnopol was delayed.

For his brave actions SS-Sturmbannführer Schellong is worthy of being awarded the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.”
