Biography

Emile Fayolle was the grandson of Maréchal Fayolle and the son of an admiral. In 1938 he joined the Armée de l’Air and received his wings in 1938. In June 1940 he was in training as a fighterpilot in Oran, Algeria. He decided not to accept the Armistice, flew to Gibraltar and subsequently went to England aboard a trawler. On completion of his conversion training on Hurricanes, he was posted to 85 Squadron. After various transfers to other squadrons, he ended up in 340 Free French Squadron in November 1941. In July 1942 he was made Squadron Leader of 174 Squadron, flying Hurribombers.
He lost his life during the raid on Dieppe but his body was not identified until 1998.
