Recommendation:
At 0800 hours in 1st November 1944, Lieutenant Earle Grady MacLeod was in command of a recce troop assaulting the town Kamperland in North Beveland. The town was known to be held by a desperate enemy force, which had been ordered to fight to the last man.
This Officer, by his bold determination and daring leadership, so disposed his small force, and so utilized all hiss fire power that the enemy was completely overwhelmed and the defence broken.
Pushing forward with utmost speed and determination, the troop completely overran the position and forced the enemy to surrender. The Commandant of the German Garrison, his staff and 198 other prisoners were taken.
Lieutenant MacLeod personally led the assault and throughout the action displayed courage and leadership of the highest order, under fire.
The capture of Kamperland, which was the escape point from Walcheren, was a most important contribution to the eventual defeat of the force of Walcheren.
