The following newspaper excerpt details why Fleischmann was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberfeldwebel Ludwig Fleischmann held a commanding hill in the Kuban bridgehead over the course of days of heavy fighting. On the last day of the enemy’s offensive he and a mere 20 of his Bavarian Jäger repelled two enemy attacks by forces that outnumbered him 8-1 and had already partially surrounded him. On this day the Soviets left behind 170 dead in front of his position.”
