The following newspaper article (dated 24.03.1945) describes why Wimmer received the Knight’s Cross…

“Knight’s Cross After a Heroic Death:

Oberleutnant Alfred Wimmer… and his Grenadier-Bataillon stormed a hotly contested village located north of Straßburg during the fighting at the beginning of this past January. Despite being wounded he retained command of his Grenadiers until finally being struck fatally. This model young officer has now been posthumously recognized with the award of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.”
