    John Thomas Cook grew up in Cork County in Ireland. He met his future wife there and after their wedding, the couple settled in England. He became sailor on the yacht of the Duke of Westminster. John Cook and his wife had three children. In 1939, the family moved to England (?)
    At the outbreak of World War Two in 1939, John ended up in the Royal Navy Reserve. He trained to become an Asdic operator. In October 1939 he was added to the crew of H.M.S. Canton Wyke, the vessel to sink the first U-boat on October 24th, 1939.
    July 8th, 1940, H.M.S. Canton Wyke was hit by a torpedo and sank. All 18 members of the crew lost their lives. The body of Thomas Cook was washed ashore near Oostvoorne.
