As crewmember of Our Destroyer H.M. Van Nes, during aerial attacks by Japanese bombers and divebombers in the Sea of Java, lasting two hours and the vessel suffering a number of direct hits casuing it to sink immediately, having displayed a sound morale, perseverance, determination and a fine devotion to duty, in particular for having endured privations on a raft or in a lifeboat for days on end during rescue operations.
