Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Unteroffizier (Junior Officer)
Unit:
Zugführer, 5. Kompanie, II. Bataillon, Panzergrenadier-Regiment 5, 12. Panzer-Division, Heer
Awarded on:
April 22nd, 1943
On the 20.01.1943 the 5./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 5 attacked the village of Kromy as part of the overall German efforts to combat the Soviet forces that had broken through near Orel. During the course of the attack a Soviet counterattack was launched against the German 7. Kompanie (which was fighting just alongside 5. Kompanie), creating a crisis for the unit. In response Unteroffizier Jasiek gathered up his Zug and thrusted into the flank of the attacking Soviets, which gave vital breathing space for the 7. Kompanie.

In the end the Germans were able to push the Soviets back to the village edge and ultimately out of it entirely. For preventing the destruction of the 7. Kompanie and great losses for the whole Bataillon, Jasiek would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
