Biography

Geert Emmens was born into a devout Calvinistic family, the eldest of five children. He was trained as a teacher.
He entered military service in 1938. Aviation appealed to him so he was given the opportunity to start flight training. May 1940 he attended Flying School Souburg and barely able to fly, he managed to escape to England via France and Wales.
He continued his flight training and was posted to 320 Squadron, flying bombing missions to Germany and France. After the war he remained in the Air Force until 1948 when he became a pilot with KLM, a job he held until 1974.
