On the 07.03.1943 the 5. Panzer-Division succeeding in largely holding its defensive front, destroying 55 enemy tanks in the process. Of these, Feldwebel Niemeck alone destroyed 15 tanks with his long-barrelled Panzer IV. For his achievements on this day Niemeck would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
