During the fighting along the Smolensk—Moscow highway the Soviets launched an assault with tank support against Gärtner’s Bataillon following an artillery duel. They achieved several small penetrations in the line, however Hauptmann Gärtner launched counterthrusts with his troops that managed to clean these up. By the evening the old frontline was restored successfully. Gärtner would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his achievements during this battle.
