    Biography

    Frederick Chase was educated at Gesham's School and Cambridge University. He was a member of the Cambridge University Air Squadron prior to being commissioned into the RAFVR.
    Chase commenced operational training at 54 OTU in October 1942 and was posted for a brief period to 68 Squadron, flying his first operational patrol in a Beaufighter VI on 4th July 1943. For three months he commanded RAF Snailwell before being posted as Flight Commander to the Mosquito NF II equipped 264 Squadron. After re-equipping with Mosquito NF XIII the Squadron moved to Hartford Bridge. His successful combat flying commenced on 15 June 1944 and in addition to the combats listed in his DFC recommendation, also destroyed a Ju88 on 10/11 August 1944, East of Le Havre. With a tally of five confirmed kills and one damaged, Chase was now an ace.
    He flew five more patrols before being posted as an Acting Wing Commander for operations duties with HQ 85 Group on 22nd October 1944.
    After the war he transferred to the Training Branche an relinquished hs commission in 1955.

    "Squadron Leader Chase has completed a large number of operational sorties as a night fighter pilot. He commenced his tour with No. 68 Squadron in March 1943 and joined this Squadron in October 1943 as Flight Commander. Since then he has given his Flight an excellent example of determination as well as being himself an outstanding Flight Commander. He has in particular distinguished himself recently over the Beach Head area and his total successes at night are four enemy aircraft destroyed and one damaged. Squadron Leader Chase is a very good pilot and leads his Flight with such zeal and efficiency that under him they have destroyed fifteen enemy aircraft."
