Sergeant Walter E. Janken, 36680376, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States at ***[Buer], Germany on 30 March 1945. Sergeant Janken, a platoon sergeant, wary of a trap, halted his men before a well-planned enemy ambush. The enemy, their plan frustrated, directed intense fire into the platoon position. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Janken moved among and reorganized his men. Upon a prearranged signal, he led the platoon forward, overrunning the enemy position, killing several and capturing eight Germans, enabling the platoon to continue upon its mission. Sergeant Janken’s leadership and his zeal for the success of his mission, reflect credit upon his character as a soldier.
