During the battle for Krivoi Rog, as the Germans were abandoning the city, Oberleutnant Gauglitz launched a final riposte into the city with three Panzers and six SPWs during the early morning of the 23.02.1944. They were able to inflict heavy losses on the Russians, and after about an hour and a half of combat pulled back over the Ingulez river just before the last bridges were blown. For his success on this day Gauglitz was awarded the Knight’s Cross.
