Lawrence G. Stander, 39676343, Sergeant, 760th Tank Battalion. For gallantry in action on 7 February 1944, in Cassino, Italy. Wounded by flying shell fragments, Sergeant Stander, tank commander, abandoned his tank when it received a direct hit from an enemy self-propelled gun and was set afire. Noticing that the assistant gunner had not followed him, he attempted to re-enter the blazing tank, disregarding enemy small arms fire and danger of a gasoline explosion. The flames were too high and he was forced to leave without being able to effect the rescue. Sergeant Stander’s heroism and determination to assist his fellow soldier typifies the highest traditions of the military service. Home address: Promontory, Utah.
