Citation:
"On the night of 5th/6th June, 1944, Staff Sergeant Herbert was the pilot of a Horsa glider detailed to land on the LZV. On approaching the French coast, his tug suddenly went into a steep spiral dive, one of its engines having cut out. Staff Sergeant very gallantly and with great difficulty managed to keep in position behind his tug, the pilot of which managed to restart his engine, but owing to the initial dive, the glider and tug combination had entered cloud and for some considerable time Staff Sergeant Herbert was compelled to keep station by his instruments only. This he successfully accomplished and eventually contrived to make a safe landing in most difficult country without the help of any ground aids and with little or no help from the noon."
