Citation:
"For heroic achievement on connection with military operations in Belgium on 25 October 1944. On the afternoon of 25 October 1944 a counter-attack was launched by the enemy on the command post, third battalion, of the regiment which Private Martilla was serving as ambulance driver. The enemy fire was heavy and consisted of small arms, machine gun, mortar fire. During the height of the attack a soldier was wounded approximately two hundred yards from the battalion aid station. Due to the intensity of the enemy fire, all personnel had take cover, but Private Martilla, with complete disregard for his own safety, jumped into his ambulance and drove in to the site of the wounded soldier. By his prompt and courageous act, he succeeded in evacuating the wounded soldier back to an area of safety where timely medical treatment could be given. This act of bravery reflects the highest traditions of the American soldier."
