Biography

Adrianus Johannes Lemmens was born March 24th, 1904, the son of Johannes Gerardus Lemmens and Catharina Maria Manders. On February 6th, 1929 he was married to Dolly Gerarda Bogaardt. After his divorce on September 17th, 1929, his second marriage was to Gertruda Catharina Geutjes on November 7th, 1929 at Nijmegen. The couple had three children. In 1930, Lemmens returned to the Dutch East-Indies, his wife following in 1931.
At the end of 1941, Lemmens served aboard the K.P.M. vessel Janssens as second mechanic and later on the ss Liran.
Early 1942, during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East-Indies, Lemmens was taken prisoner by the Japanese and interned in Camp Kesilir on east-Java. Later on he was transfered to Banjubiru on central Java and subsequently to Changi in Singapore. Ultimately he ended up in a labor camp at Pulu Damar near Singapore. Lemmens survived the war and was freed on August 15th, 1945, in Singapore by a Ghurkabrigade.
