Following the renewed attack of the US V. Corps against the Roer dams beginning on 04.02.1945, Generalfeldmarschall Model directed that the two dams here were to be destroyed. Leutnant der Reserve Mangels and his Pionierzug were directly attached to the LXXIV. Armee-Korps and given responsibility for completing this task. Despite being wounded, Mangels performed his duty with bravery and was able to blow the dams. The resulting flooding halted the allied advance across the river for two weeks. For his carrying out this important assignment successfully, Leutnant Mangels would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
