On the 28.06.1942 the Infanterie-Regiment 123 was involved in the Siege of Sevastopol. On this day the Regiment stormed the village of Gajtani and took 150 Soviets prisoner. Afterwards Hauptmann Marienfeld cleared the rock canyon near the village with his Bataillon and then took up positions before the Tschornaja Valley. Following a swift assessment of the situation Marienfeld then took the bold decision to continue to advance 24 hours earlier than ordered, which led his Regiment to an attack on Inkerman. Here a gun bunker was captured, and thereafter the main part of the kilometre long village. For his independent action, which led to important results, Marienfeld would receive the Knight’s Cross.

After being subordinated to the V. Armee-Korps the previous day, his Kampfgruppe launched a counterattack on the 08.05.1944 through the broken-through Nikolajewka position in the direction of the crest of the Sapun mountain.
