During the fighting in the central sector of the Eastern front, Reineking committed a deed of decisive battlefield importance. Recognizing the battle situation correctly, he defended an important hill position all on his own to the last round against an attack by strong Soviet infantry and tank forces. With this action he enabled the friendly German infantry to conduct a smooth withdrawal. For his heroic actions here, Reineking would receive the Knight’s Cross.
