    Biography

Cornelis Garritsen lived at 8 Tulpenlaan in Ede and was the son of Herman Garritsen, (Steenderen - † November 18, 1940. Ede), fuel merchant and his wife Jansje Lagerweij. Cornelis Garritsen was a miner and later on fuel and coal merchant. He was unmarried. He was a member of the resistance (Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten, BS) and one of the 14 members of the Ede Group that was arrested by the Germans in the night of Tuesday 8 to Wednesday March 9, 1945 after a failed reception of a dropping on a field behind the Leperkoen Estate near Lunteren. Three additional arrests were made later on. Garritsen was transferred to the Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort (police transit camp PDA) and was given the number 11198
Cornelis Garritsen was executed on March 20, 1945, in front of the Loosdrecht town hall, along with Folkert Roosjen, Peter Roseboom, Rijk Tigelaar, Cornelis Verduijn, Hylke van Vliet of the Ede Group and four other resistance fighters in retaliation of the violent death of a German sergeant. That same day, ten members of the BS, also arrested at said weapons drop, were executed in Amersfoort in retaliation of the death of police officer Diederik Lutke Schipholt (April 9, 1916 Hengelo (Ov) - † March 14, 1945, Amersfoort).
Along with his comrades, Garritsen was taken from the PDA to Loosdrecht. Shackled in pairs, the victims were arranged facing the 15 man firing squad of the Grüne Polizei. The members of the BS were executed, partly standing on a bicycle track and the grassy shoulder of the road.
Garritsen's name is on display on the war memorial near the Loosdrecht town hall on the Loodsdrechtsedijk.
