Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel
Unit:
1/4 Hamphire Regiment
Awarded on:
January 13th, 1944
Citation:
"This officer before the expedition sailed contracted jaundice. Realising the importat role allotted to his unit, he refused to go sick. He led the assault on 9th Sep and his battalion captured all its objectives (taking on the way 3 batteries of 88 mm all of which could shell the beaches). But for this succeess, the beach head could not have been established on D day. Lt Col CHANDLER's personal leadership and forward reconnaissance (with complete disregard of bith small arms and mortar fire) were directly responsible for this feat of arms.
He continued to command his battalion and personally superintended the repulse of a counter attack on 14 Sep until ordered by me to go sick. Throughout, inspite of his illness, he remained composed, alert and agressive and inspired his men to be the same."

Awarded as an immediate DSO.
Distinguished Service Order (DSO)
