On January 3, 1945, at the Battle of the Bulge,"when elements of the adjacent units were pinned down by heavy machine gun fire, Private First Class Rethemeyer charged down upon the German positions firing his Browning Automatic Rifle from the hip. Although wounded by the intense fire directed at him, he continued his lone assault and forced three enemy machine gun crews to withdraw."
