Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Captain
Unit:
9 Commando, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (attd Special Service Troops) (Conara, Tasmania)
Awarded on:
May 4th, 1944
Recommendation:
"This officer was in command of a force of two troops whose task was to destroy an enemy post near a demolished bridge. He brought his force through a most difficult area of floods and minefields, and led a successful attack on the position. By the time all enemy resistance had been mopped up it was nearly daylight, and Captain Cameron, realising that it would be impossible to withdraw across the river further down, as planned, organised a crossing at the broken bridge. In spite of enemy mortar fire on the bridge, and the absence of any bridging equipment except for a damaged rubber boat, the whole force including prisoners and wounded, crossed the river with the loss of only one life. This was due to Captain Cameron’s excellent organisation and his imperturbable conduct under fire."
