    Biography

    Machiel Balk was born on July 12th, 1925 as the son to Jacobus Johannes Albertus Balk and Maria Balk-Klumper and sister to Maartje Balk. He was not married, studied and was Dutch-Reformed. He lived in Bilthoven, the Netherlands, Ruysdaellaan 20. With the hiding name Mach he was part of the resistance group KP-Bilthoven. While doing a sabotage on November 9th, 1944 he was discovered. During the fire fight that followed, he severely wounded and arrested. Later, according to his deathnotice, he would die of his wounds in a hospital in Utrecht. According to his family he was seriously wounded held at the police station and was his mother summoned there. He would only receive medical help if his mother gave the names of his friends. When she refused, Machiel supposedly died of his wounds in the police station.
