Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Major
Unit:
5th Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment)
Awarded on:
March 1st, 1945
Citation:
"On the early morning of 29 Oct 44. Major Smith-Cunninghame was commanding one of the forward companies in the attack on Horst Village. After a long and difficult night advance the companies attacked frontally. About 800 yards from the village they and their supporting tanks were met by accurate anti-tank, mortar and shell fire from the village, and the tanks were halted. Appreciating the situation Major Smith-Cunninghame switched his attack to a flank. By skilful use of his supporting arms, he manoeuvred his company into a good flanking position through country as yet not cleared of enemy. The assault was so daringly carried out by Major Smith-Cunninghame at the head of his men that the enemy were taken completely by surprise. A troop of fie ld guns and two A/Tk guns which had been in action up till that moment were captured, and the enemy killed or routed. During the period of re-organisation the company was very heavily mortared and sniped. Major Smith-Cunninghame was everywhere encouraging his men, during a very difficult period while the enemy overlooked his position closely. The ultimate success of the whole action was due in no small degree to the daring flank attack which this officer personally led, and throughout which he showed complete disregard of his personal safety, and great courage. His devotion to duty and bearing in the face of the enemy's severe opposition were a model of good leadership."
