"For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services from 22 October 1943 to 30 April 1944. As Commander of a Hospital Platoon, he took an inexperienced unit into a combat arrea and established a hospital for the definitve care of seriously wounded, non-transportable, surgical cases, which provided services comparable to that of General hospitals in rear areas. Major Newman landed at Anzio with the Assault forces and within a few hours had a hospital unit in full operation, providing the only continuous hospitalization on the beachhead for five days.
