Biography

On May 8th, 1940, Cornelis Louwen set sail on board the tug Cornelis (II) from the port of Maassluis to Algiers. Due to the German invasion on May 10th, 1940, the vessel could not return to the Netherlands. He managed to get to London and registered aboard the Zwarte Zee (III) on January 10th, 1941.
On May 14th, 1941, he transferred to the tugboat Schelde (III), initially commanded by Master Jan Kalkman and later by Arie J. Vlielander.
During the Normandy invasion he took part in Operation Pluto (Pipeline Under the Ocean) in this vessel.
On October 31st, 1945, the Schelde (III) entered her homeport of Maassluis for the first time after the beginning of the war.
