He has distinguished himself, as a member of the crew of bunker 138 near Grubbenvorst in the morning of May 10th, 1940, by courageous conduct in the face of the enemy inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy as gunner of a light machinegun under heavy fire from enemy artillery and machineguns; at the end continuing the fight on his own, using his rifle after his machinegun had been put out of action.
