"The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Louis R. Cain, Jr. (MCSN: 279760), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville Island, Solomon Islands, on December 22, 1943. Although seriously wounded while leading his squad under extremely heavy enemy fire in an attempt to flank a hostile position, Sergeant Cain steadfastly maintained control of his men, skillfully directing the evacuation of the injured and the successful withdrawal of the entire group before he was struck again and fell, mortally wounded. Sergeant Cain's inspiring leadership, indomitable courage, and valiant self-sacrifice were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."
