Awarded for his actions during the battle of Crete. In this battle his unit jumped into prison valley as part of von der Heydte’s I. Bataillon, and was immediately forced into bitter combat with local Greek and New Zealand forces. Hagl and his Zug would distinguish themselves when they spearheaded the Bataillon’s efforts to link up with the III. Bataillon of the Regiment. Later, on the 26.05.1941, Hagl was wounded in the right thigh after taking over the 2. Kompanie. However he continued to lead his Kompanie and was among the many brave German Fallschirmjäger that brought about the ultimate German success on the island.
