"From the beginning of March till the end of September 1943, this Petty Officer assisted in the disposal and rendering safe of over one hundred enemy mines washed ashore on the coasts of Tripolitania and Southern Tunisia. In addition he assisted in towing spent enemy circling torpedoes clear of the harbour of Tripoli and in recovering certain of them after the two attacks in March and April 1943. One of the was probably similar to that in Naples which killed the two men who were trying to render it safe, and the recovery of these torpedoes is considered to require bravery and devotion to duty of a high order such as to warrant the award of the George Medal."
