Awarded for actions during the battle of Norway. Schönbeck and his Kompanie had been alerted to the presence of an elite Norwegian battalion (I./J.R. 12) north of Narvik. With a strength of 230 men at his disposal Schönbeck, began an attack against this unit at 04:00 on the 25.04.1940. In the battle that followed the Norwegian battalion (consisting of about 600 men) was wiped out and the Germans took 144 prisoners.
