Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Sergeant
Unit:
No. 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron, Royal Air Force
Awarded on:
March 10th, 1944
Recommendation:
"Sergeant Joy has now completed 19 successful sorties, all with the exception of Milan against german targets. It is noteworthy that the last eight trips have all been to Berlin in he has in addition visited Hannover on four occasions. Throughout this period, his work as a mid-upper gunner has been distinguished by untiring zeal and energy and a complete disregard of personal danger. He well demonstated his ability on the night of 16/17th December, 1943, when on route to Berlin, he detected another Lancaster being attacked by an Me.109 and making no offensive reply. Sergeant Joy and his rear gunner immediately opened fire at approximately 500 yards and had the satisfaction of seeing the fighter burst into flames and disintegrate in the air. This claim has been officially confirmed as destroyed. I strongly recommend sergeant Joy for an immediate award of the D.F.M."
Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM)
