He has distinguished himself in 1943 and 1944 in combat against the enemy as a member of an O.D. group in Roosteren which guided escaped Allied prisoners of war and aircrews across the Belgian border and in so doing, frequently came under fire from German border patrols. In 1944, the O.D. group was transformed into a military unit and as deputy commander he trained this group
to be deployed in combat against the enemy, in close cooperation with Allied forces when in September 1944, Roosteren was in the frontline, and the group was frequently engaged in fire fights, sometimes taking prisoners as well. He evaded capture by strong German patrols twice who were deployed for this purpose. He has proved himself as a courageous soldier.
