Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Sergeant
Unit:
Corps of Royal Engineers
Awarded on:
June 21st, 1945
Citation:
"For outstanding leadership and devotion to duty in the field. This N.C.O. has, throughout the period, been a tower of strength to his platoon and to his Fd Coy. He played a leading part in the construction of three major pontoon bridges over the MAAS, from 5-9 Nov 44 at KENT Bridge, Berg, from 15-24 Dec 44 at QUBEC Bridge RAVENSTEIN, and again from 3-24 Jan 45 at ILEX Bridge, MOOK. He was also engaged in maintenance work on the first named bridge throughout the serious floods in Nov 44.
In all these operations he was absolutely tireless working at times at night in water up to his waist, and he allowed no difficulty to defeat him; his quick grasp of any engineer problem, his example, energy and drive, made him an inspiration and a source of confidence to all who worked with him or under him.
Previously, at NIJMEGEN, while working on booms and bridges on the WAAL, at times under heavy shell fire, his steadiness and leadership were always in evidence."
British Empire Medal (BEM & EGM)
