"This officer has completed his third tour of operational duty. During this period he has destroyed at least nine enemy aircraft and damaged four. Since the award of a Bar to the D.F.C. he has destroyed two enemy aircraft. On one occasion his bomber was damaged by fragments from an enemy aircraft. Only one engine of his bomber remained serviceable for the return journey from Stuttgart. Sqn. Ld Mathews, by bis fearlessness and devotion to duty, has set an example to all."
