O'neill, Clarence

Biography

Clarence was a very proud member of the Army Air Corps from Sept. 29, 1942, until his honorable discharge on Sept. 27, 1945. While in the military, Clarence was in the 390th bombardment group, 571st squadron. While on active duty in the European Theater, he flew on 25 missions over Germany as the Left Waist Gunner on a "Flying Fortress" B17 lovingly named the Pickle Dropper. Living through those 25 missions, earned Clarence the coveted "Lucky Bastards" certificate! Clarence was the only member of a 10-man crew who was wounded, earning him a Purple Heart. He was also awarded the distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters by the command of Gen. James Harold Doolittle. Clarence also maintained a diary of all of his 25 missions while in the military.
