Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Oberst (Colonel)
Unit:
Flak-Sturm-Abteilung. 802(v), Luftwaffe
Awarded on:
November 18th, 1944
In October 1944 the Flak-Abteilung 802, under the command of Oberstleutnant Salamon, was deployed to Gumbinnen (in East Prussia) on the 18.10.1944. On the 20.10.1944 it received the order to set up an anti-tank defense along the southern edge of the city. The next day the Soviets began launching their attacks, but by then the Germans were ready. By the time the Soviet assaults on the 21/22.10.1944 had concluded, they had lost a total of 28 tanks and 9 anti-tank guns. This result stymied their offensive in this sector, and was a direct result of the successful defense by the Flak-Abteilung 802. As such Oberstleutnant Salamon would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross shortly afterwards.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
