"The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Charles Joseph Boyle (NSN: 0-185559), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the line of his profession as Assistant Navy Beachmaster of the U.S.S. J. FRANKLIN BELL (APA-16) during combat landing operations of Task Force FIFTY-ONE forces against Attu Island, Aleutian Chain, commencing on 11 May 1943. On a hazardous and extremely unfavorable landing beach which was subjected to heavy intermittent shelling by enemy artillery and anti-aircraft gun emplacements, Ensign Boyle carried out the duties of Assistant Beachmaster with the highest efficiency, thereby contributing greatly to the successful accomplishment of the landing. Upon the withdrawal of the U.S.S. J. FRANKLIN BELL, Ensign Boyle remained on Attu Island with a reduced Navy Beach Party under orders to direct the unloading of other ships by landing boats. During this time he led a reconnaissance party into the Chichagof Harbor area, landing on enemy positions in the face of heavy machine gun fire to successfully accomplish his assigned mission. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
