He has distinguished himself in combat against the enemy by exceptionally courageous and tactful deeds, serving as section commander of the security company at the auxiliary air base of Ockenburg in the early morning of May 10, 1940 after enemy troops in transport aircraft and paratroops in overwhelming numbers and firepower had landed on and around the air base. He courageously led his section, consisting of men who had been in training only for 3 months, standing fast until the last in the face of heavy enemy machinegun fire in the part of the air base alloted to him until he was severely injured himself and almost no one of his section was left.
