"A superb and fearless seaman, unwavering in his devotion to duty, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Maines skillfully directed the hazardous minesweeping operations of his command and effectively cleared approach channels for the passage of the assault boat waves and fire support areas off the hostile shore for the close-in-operation of Naval bombardment units. Subjected to constant enemy aerial attack, shellfire in the shipping areas and adverse weather conditions, his ship gallantly carried out all assigned minesweeping missions, thereby insuring the safe movement of seaborne traffic with all urgent maintenance requirements of our ground forces."
