"For gallantry at the wheel of. H.M.S. Broke when she left the harbour of Algiers under heavy fire. A shell killed all in the wheel house save himself and one other; but though blinded by smoke and choked by fumes he steered his ship with unerring skill through the gap in the boom. Any deviation from his course would have endangered his ship and her company."
