"As a fighter pilot, he has a great morale and, even in the most difficult moments, he knows how to maintain the morale and composure that makes him a patrol leader.
Calm and decided, he quickly won four official victories. Jacques Mathis went down in flames on September 6, 1943, during a surprise engagement against enemy fighters. He parachuted and managed to return to the friendly lines despite severe burns to the face and hands, and, by his attitude and courage, provokes the admiration of his French and Soviet combat comrades."
